Valspar primer review

Painting trim is one of my least favorite things to do. This post contains affiliate links for your shopping convenience. See my disclosure policy here. While house-hunting, we walked in the door of our current house and saw this. It was love at first sight. Eric and I both were pretty much immediately sold on the house because of this room. Granted the rest of the house had amazing bones and was exactly what our family needed.

With those big beautiful windows came a lot of outdated trim. We decided it was worth it.

Obviously we bought the house. Then came the procrastinating. We waited nearly two years to paint that trim because, well, it was really hard to get motivated to do it. We had already purchased the paint and it had been sitting there, just waiting for us.

Sad that this is what it took! But we got busy and over about a three day period, knocked it out. Enter a trim edger. This tool is a lifesaver! First, line the edger up against the top of the trim piece so the wall is blocked. Take your angled trim brush and paint the top half of the trim. Wipe the edger clean with a cloth and then flip it, putting it between your flooring and the base of the trim.Valspar Bonding Primer-Sealer is a one-step primer and sealer coat designed to work on problematic surfaces, both porous and glossy.

Covering between and square feet per gallon, this primer is exceedingly thick, making it difficult to handle, so use sparingly. But the product's thickness is inescapable since most bonding primers rely on thick viscosity to help paint adhere not just to ordinary surfaces like drywall but to problem surfaces like metal and plastic. Bonding primers are also the way to begin if you intend to paint melamine, tile, or laminate.

In most cases with bonding primers, the per-gallon cost is more than the cost of comparably sized interior or exterior acrylic-latex paint.

However, this cost usually evens out in the end since fewer coats of bonding primers are required. In many cases, only one coat is needed in order to help subsequent layers of paint adhere. Low odor, and low VOCthis product is not noxious to work with.

Because of its thick viscosity, Valspar Bonding Primer-Sealer can be difficult to spread, roll, and brush. If you are accustomed only to working with acrylic-latex paint, Valspar Bonding Primer-Sealer and other brands of primer-sealers operate generally the same way. There are a few exceptions, though. Bonding primer-sealers are very thick, which makes them difficult to pour, roll, and brush.

When using a brush, opt for a polyester brush, rather than horse hair.

If you are tired of priming and re-priming, then a bonding primer may be what you need. When you have a difficult surface such as knotty or tannin-releasing wood, slick glass or metal, or even weathered paint on wood, you need a bonding primer. This primer bonds especially well to highly porous and otherwise poor surfaces because, physically, it lays on and stays on like a thick plastic blanket.

This is a one-coat primer you can apply to almost anything prior to painting. After the product has completely dried, it is sandable down to a smooth surface suitable for painting.

This primer can be used on bricknatural stone, veneer stonenew and old drywallplaster, bare wood, painted wood, wood paneling, PVC, all types of metal including aluminum, ceramic tile, porcelain tile, glass, and some weathered paint. Though this product can cover up many issues on a surface, all mildew must first be completely removed. Keep in mind that you pay the price for this by having to deal with its very thick consistency.

But this is typical for any of these one-step, thick primers, Masterchem's KILZ being Valspar's most prominent competitor. Bonding primer is often touted as the miracle subsurface for porous surfaces like weathered wood or masonry because its thickness bridges cellular spaces.

Even though bonding primer-sealers can cover limited amounts of dust and debris, it is still best to clean the surface as thoroughly as possible and then let it dry. Especially dusty and chalky surfaces should be cleaned, as well as those that are greasy, oily, and waxy. Remove all peeling paint. Stir the product with a drill and mixer instead of with a wooden stirring stick. This is necessary to pull up the solids from the bottom of the can. Since this product can stick to glossy surfaces, it is not absolutely necessary to sand them.

However, if you are able, sanding will always help a bonding coat adhere better. Cover nail holes with wood putty and caulk all cracks and joints. Clean all mildew with a solution of one part liquid chlorine bleach to three parts of water, then rinse clean. Let the surface completely dry. If the surface is bare wood, it may take at least two full days for the wood to fully dry. Line the metal roller tray, then pour the product in the lined roller tray.

Pour in only enough to cover the lower reservoir. Lightly dab the roller cover in the product. If using a brush, load the brush lightly on the tips of the bristles. Apply in one coat.Check stock in your local store.

Excellent adhesion ensures optimal performance of the top coat, lasting longer without flaking or peeling. Fewer coats of the undercoat and top coat are needed due to high opacity and hiding power. They make the paint as cheaply as possible so they can pay for all their marketing! And I don't mean Sherman Williams either. They own Valspar, so how much better do you think their paint is? Does not cover, no pigment in the paint, its like spreading colored water. Five coats now, and I can still see the old color.

Valspar refunded the money spent on their product. The only thing - I wasted almost two days on this project! I've had similar problems, it's like it doesn't adhere to the base product that's being covered. I say prime with a good primer kill or bullseye with a tint mixed in. Also watch out if you return to get more paint that you get same base product number before tinting. Valspar is crap, and has been for years. To bad you had to mess up your own home. If it had been one of the homes you have been doing for years, you would have never found out about what crap it is!

I've used it in several rooms. It still needs another coat. Then, it applied and covered beautifully. The comparison is glaring! I called Valspar customer service. They offered no insight other than "did I sand my baseboards?A fresh coat of paint is the easiest, low-cost way to freshen up your home.

So how do you make an informed decision? How can you differentiate between brand loyalty and user error? We devised a simple test to evaluate the hiding ability of Behr, Kilz and Valspar primer by brushing a generous amount over a dark purple wall. Read on and decide for yourself which primer provided the best coverage. Editors note: This post originally ran in June, Home Depot produces Behr Premium Plus primer, which is available nationwide at retail locations.

Premium Plus primer is marketed for its ability to adhere to glossy surfaces and hide heavy stains. Kilz oil-based primer features a newly styled look with the same great formula. Oil-based products typically go on very smoothly but take longer to dry and have much stronger odor.

Both of these are true of Kilz Original. By inverting the color scheme, you can better differentiate between each sample and see which primer provided the thickest, most uniform coverage. Did you know that paint can even be recycled into new paint or a completely different product?

Check out this great post detailing different solutions to disposing of old paint. Happy painting! My past experiences wit Behr have been bad to say the least. I think one thing that may be an issue is which primer seals the best and creates the best base for accepting the top finish coat. Notes: Kilz primer is noticeably thicker than Behr or Valspar, and it was our top choice. With only a small amount of color showing through, Kilz primer is the closest to providing one-coat coverage.

I had to cover up neon blue and sponge-painted green walls. After 2 coats of Kilz, it was amazing the difference. This company is not yet accredited.

For more information about reviews on ConsumerAffairs. Then I painted the wall with Kiltz water base white primer to give the Valspar oil base Enamel paint good adhesion. The Valspar enamel was a little "thick" straight out of the gallon can.

I poured about a "pint" of paint out of the gallon can into one of those plastic paint mixing buckets they sell in the paint section. Added a "splash" of mineral spirits to the pint and mixed it with a 4 in brush I used to apply the enamel paint. The mineral spirits thinned the enamel paint and made it easy to spread good coverage. There was a lot of little drips, no problem as long as you brush them off right away. One coat of paint was all I needed.

One gallon covered half of my exterior walls. I now have a beautiful white exterior that looks like it has a clear coat of paint over it. Glows in the moonlight. Repeals moister and rainwater. The can said 7 days for paint to full cure. Slow cure equals longevity. We pulled down trim, missed, and textured walls. I read these reviews and almost had a heart attack but the reviews couldn't be more off base.

We chose Juniper Breeze and it only needed one coat. The kitchen and living area were done in Coconut milk and it barely needed a second coat. My husband is now taking the tape off of the walls and it is beautiful!!

We will continue to use Valspar for the rest of our home. Get buying tips about Paint Brands delivered to your inbox. We recently had our bathroom redone and bought Valspar ceiling paint at the recommendation of Lowes Home Improvement Center. Within a few weeks of the contractor sanding the ceiling and applying a primer, and two coats of Valspar paint, the paint was peeling off of the ceiling. Although the product failed, the Product Support Department reimbursed us for the cost of labor as well as the cost of the paint.

I deducted one star because it did take over 60 days to get the money after the online claim was filed. In addition, I had to reject their initial offer to reimburse for the paint only. With that said, they made the proper restitution and I give them credit for fixing their problem. I used it to paint wood which had been previously stained and coated with polyurethane.

Prior to painting, I thoroughly sanded the piece so the paint would adhere.
